As an ESOL teacher, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know students from throughout Latin America and getting to know about their cultures. Also, I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled to several countries in Latin America to experience some of the cultures for myself.
Latino students have long been a part of the Southeast family, but in recent years, we’ve begun to welcome students from East Asia. Currently, the ESOL department has students from both Vietnam and China.
Unfortunately, I know little about the numerous, diverse East Asian cultures. On June 8, I hope to learn a lot more when I travel to Japan for three weeks, as part of the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program.
At the same time, I hope to learn more about the Japanese economy. Georgia and Japan have some important economic ties. Japan is Georgia’s second-leading international trading partner.
Finally, this summer I hope to learn more about Japan’s educational system, which is one of the best systems in the world.
I know school is out in June, but if you'll occasionally glance at my blog and post, maybe, we’ll all learn a little something together, even if it is summer break.
